I’m Only One Person, so What Can I Do?

By Caroline S. Mackay

(Narrators 1, 2, and 3 come to the mikes.)

NARRATOR 1:        I’m only one person so what can I do
To keep the American Spirit strong and true?

NARRATOR 2:        I’m only one person I can’t do a lot
To save the freedoms for which many bravely fought.

NARRATOR 3:        I’m only one person, one of so many
How can I serve this land with freedoms a plenty?

(Narrators 1 and 2 sit down.)

SONG:  AMERICA

(Sing the first verse and then sing it again and substitute these words)

                        My country’ tis of thee
                        S
weet land of liberty

What can I do?

To keep our country strong,

And fight against all wrong

Saving freedoms song

What can I do?

(Narrators 4-11 come to the mikes.)

NARRATOR 4:        I ask this question for all of us now here
What can we do for the country we hold so dear?

NARRATOR 5:        It does not have to be something gigantic
Here are some good ideas from which you could pick.

NARRATOR 6:        The flag that we pledge should be treated with pride
To keep it from falling many soldiers have died.

NARRATOR 7:        It should never be dropped or placed on the ground.
Flying high in the sky is where it should be found.

NARRATOR 8:        When taken down at the end of the long day
Fold it properly and put it safely away.

(2 students could demonstrate how to fold the flag as Narrator 8 says their line.)

I recently purchased I’m  Only One Person, So What Can I Do? By Caroline Mackay.  It suggests the use of the song, “What’s More American” by Kadish Millet.  I would love to use this song in my program, but I am having a very difficult time finding the sheet music or a karaoke version of the song on Itunes or anywhere else.  Do you, by any chance, happen to know where I might be able to find a resource I could use?  Thanks for your help!

Valerie

Oh, I could kiss you! J  I was not having any luck finding it, so I am so very grateful!  My fourth grade students love the song and can’t wait to sing it for Veteran’s Day!  Thanks so much for your help!
