AMERICAN PRIDE
By: Caroline S. Mackay 1989

(The chorus enters to the music of SCHOOLS OUT. When half of the chorus has entered they should start singing the first song. As soon as the entire chorus is in then the speakers should enter. They should be excited and bubbly. This group of children should include all speaking parts except Justin, and Kathie. Tacie should follow them in looking discouraged and very quiet, watching all that goes on. When they have all entered then they should all sing the song.)

SONG: SCHOOL’S IS OUT (By Gene Barge and Frank Guida)

BLAIR:          Did you see the teacher when the bell rang?

JAMIE:          (shakes head) I couldn’t believe it.

TACIE:           Our teacher in Mexico would never have done that.

RYAN:            I mean, in all of my five years in school I’ve never had a teacher do that                                     on the last day.

MARIE:         She’s so short.

TACIE:           How could she jump that high?

JAMIE:          (shakes head) Touched the ceiling.

BLAIR:          I think that she just might be happy to be out of school.

JAMIE:          (Nods head and emphatically says) HAPPY!!!

MARIE:         Happy! That doesn’t even start to describe it.

LISA:              I don’t think that happy is the word. Maybe ecstatic. (thinks)…OR
                        maybe over zealous.

RYAN:            Did you hear her talking under her breath as we left?

JAMIE:          (shakes head) Nope, sure didn’t.

TRACY:         What was she saying?

TACIE:           Something about blue noses. (wrinkles her nose)

BLAIR:          I was up front and she said… (stands up and faces the audience with                                                                                     hands   together at waist height like an opera                                    Roses are red                           singer and repeats)
                                    Violets are blue.
I know you’re glad to leave
                                    And I will be too.

LISA:              Actually the verse should be… (stands)
                                    Roses are red
                                    Violets are smelly
                                    Be joyous as you exit
                                    ‘Cause I readily agree.

(Justin and Angie come running in waving his report card. He is holding a bat, ball, and mitt on his shoulder.)

JUSTIN:         I can hardly believe it. I made it through 5th grade. (holds up report card
then opens it and peers at it. Blair peeks over his shoulder.)

LISA:              Astounding!

BLAIR:          Just barely.

(Justin playfully hits Blair with his report card.)

KATHIE:        You don’t have too much room to talk Blair. (points to his report card
                        tucked into his back pocket.)

BLAIR:          (offended)        I beg your pardon. (He grabs for his report card as Kathie                           takes it from his pocket.)

KATHIE:        (holds Blair off with one hand and the report card away from his with the
other hand) I bet if I opened this right now, we would find a note from
the teacher thanking you for passing to the next grade.

JAMIE:          (nods head) Right on. (gives thumbs up sign)

JUSTIN:         Right! That way she doesn’t have to deal with you again!

BLAIR:          (hangs head) OK, Ok, let’s forget about (get’s the report card) that.
Let’s think of something far better.

RYAN:            I want to think about baseball and swimming…

TRACY:         …camping, hiking…

LISA:             (stands) …actually you ought to be thinking about your future… (sits)

LATER ON IN THE PROGRAM IT GOES FROM FUN THINGS STUDENTS DO TO BECOMING A PROUD AMERICAN

(Jamie shakes head)

TACIE:           This is a special school and I really want to go.

BLAIR:          (shakes head) You are sick. Sick! Sick! Sick

JAMIE:          (nods head)     Call the Paramedics.

KATHIE:        Just what kind of school is this anyways?

TACIE:           It’s a school so that I can become and citizen of the United States of  America. You know an American like you.

JUSTIN:         American! If you play baseball you’ve got to be an American already!

JAMIE:          (nods) American

BLAIR:          Baseball is our nation sport. Nothing is more American than playing  baseball.

LISA:              Blair, your knowledge of this country is really miniscule.

JAMIE:          (holds fingers together to demonstrate) Tiny.

LISA:              There are many things that are unique about our country and if other
people from other countries see or hear them they know that you are from
                        America.

BLAIR:          Such as?

LISA:              Such as…(points to the chorus or the mikes depending on if you are going to have the chorus sing the song or if you are going to have it performed by a small group or a solo.)
