‘TWAS THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE
By Caroline S. Mackay
(Speakers 1 and 2 come to the mikes and speak with no one on stage.)
SPEAKER 1: ‘Twas the 4th of July
And all through our town,
People had come
From miles and miles around.
SPEAKER 2: To line the streets
And celebrate with glee,
That the United States
Was still strong and free.
(Music starts. The Stars & Stripes Forever would be very good here. Have the chorus and students enter from many different doors marching, waving hats, and flags. Have them wear patriotic colors and shorts etc. like they were going to a parade. Have a few of them carry lawn chairs, pillows and blankets. Have students sit on risers with the lawn chairs out to the side and the blankets and pillow in front. )
(Speaker 3-7 come to the mikes.)
SPEAKER 3: The children were wiggling (children wiggle in seats)
With a great delight,
Anticipating the parade
And it’s beautiful sights.
SPEAKER 4: The bands, the floats
The animals and more,
Would be enjoyed
By the rich and the poor.
SPEAKER 5: When way down the street
They can see it come,
Hearing the beat of a
Big bass drums. (everyone claps on drum)
SPEAKER 6: First came the flag (someone beats a drum)
Of red, white, and blue,
Carried by soldiers
That we are proud of, too.
SPEAKER 7: They stayed in step (children bring in flag and
With the beat of a drum, stop center stage, wait
Then stopped and waited for everyone to stand)
While to attention we come.
(Students and audience stand. Speakers 3-7 go back to their places.))
