Thanksgiving Celebration Then & Now
By Caroline S. Mackay
This is a celebration of Thanksgiving. It is all in rhyme so it is easy to memorize
Grade Level 2nd-5th
Speaking parts: You can divide them up between more children or combine them and use less children.
There is a place to the children's art.
There is a place for one liners for shy students that still want to say something.
SAMPLE OF SCRIPT:
SPEAKER 1: It’s time to think of Pilgrims
Who came here long ago.
Searching for some freedom
This seemed like the place to go.
SPEAKER 2: They had found they could not worship
The way that they believed
It meant leaving their homeland
They decided to travel the sea.
SPEAKER 3: They boarded ships at the harbor
The one we remember was the Mayflower.
There was no gas motor to start
They had to rely on wind power.
(Speaker 1, 2 and 3 should take their places in the chorus.)
MAYFLOWER SONG: (Any Mayflower song you may have. I have never been able to find one, so I use this one instead. You sing it to the tune of SHE’LL BE COMIN’ ROUND THE MOUNTAIN, WHEN SHE COMES.) (On the first verse have the boys sing “They loaded up the Mayflower and the girls sing ‘yes they did.’ When the girls sing their part have them put their hands on their hips and turn sideways toward the Boys. Boys and girls should sing line 3 and 4.)
Line 1 They loaded up the Mayflower, yes they did
Line 2 They loaded up the Mayflower, yes they did,
Line 3 They loaded up the Mayflower,
Line 4 With al the things like food and powder.
Line 5 They loaded up the Mayflower, yes they did.
