This is a one act play that can be rehearsed all year long. Then at the end of the year you can put the songs together and assign and memorize parts and rehearse a little.

There is a place in this play for shy students to do one liners. You can change the songs to the ones that you already teach.
EXAMPLE OF DIALOGUE
SUE: Hurry, you don’t want to miss the first day of school.
(Lights go out and the bed is quickly moved and a few desks and chairs are pushed onto stage. Candy should be sitting in one of the chairs. Before the lights come on this next conversation should take place in the dark.)
GEORGE: I can’t go to school with you guys. You’re old
DON: We’re not old. Your teacher is old. We’re just in fifth grade.
GEORGE: Fifth grade, I can’t be in fifth grade I’m only six.
SUE: Hurry, George. Pull up your pajamas or you’ll trip on them.
GEORGE: Pajamas! I can’t go to school in my pajamas.
SUE: Yes, you can. We don’t want to be late.
GEORGE: I can’t be late. I’ll just turn around and try again tomorrow.
DON, SUE: (together) Oh no you don’t. Get moving.
(The lights come on and George is pushed on stage by Sue and Don. They all come in and Candy stands to greet them.)
CANDY: Hi. Isn’t this fun? A new year, a new class, a new teacher (looks George up and down) and a new short, little class mate.
GEORGE: I’m not short, I’m just young.
CANDY: I hope that this year we do a lot of math. It’s my best subject and I’m good at it.
GEORGE: Math? What is math?
DON: It’s numbers.
CANDY: You add, subtract, multiply, and all sorts of wonderful things.
GEORGE: Subtract, multiply! You’ve got to be kidding. I’m only if first grade. I can’t do all of that stuff.
CANDY: Yes, you can. It’s easy. Even a worm can do it. Listen to my classmates they’ll tell you. (indicates the chorus)
