This is a one act play with students demonstrating how music affects all of our lives. There are 10 major speaking parts that could be divided with many other students if you wish. Each set between songs could be done by other students. There are 10 suggested songs for the chorus or for solos or small groups. These songs could easily be swapped out with songs that you are familiar with. There is an area where students could make up their own dances or groups to do TV theme music.
There is very little needed in the way of props and stage setting. It is an easy to put together play that is fun for the students and audience. Minimal practice is needed if the music is taught by your music teacher and you do the play.
MUSIC GOES WITH ANYTHING SAMPLE
(Narrator comes to the mike.)
NARRATOR: We would like to welcome you to the 5th grade musical program for the year 1999 and 2000. Be patient the students will arrive shortly.
(A student dressed as a teacher comes on to stage and rings a bell. The students, chorus and speakers, come from all different directions talking quietly and dressed as if they were going to school.)
(The chorus can sit on the right hand side of the stage on risers and on the steps leading up to the stage. Those sitting on the risers should be the ones that will need to get backstage to get ready to do their part on stage.)
(Teacher with the bell comes forward to the music stand has the students arise and leads them in the song Sing.)
SONG: SING (By Joe Raposo sung by the Carpenters)
(At the end when they yell sing the teacher should faint and two students can help her off stage.)
(The students with speaking parts should stand as they speak.)
STUDENT 1: Who wants to sing? I get tired of that music teacher. All she wants to do is sing?
STUDENT 2: Just what do you expect her to do? Teach us science?
STUDENT 1: No, but I really can’t see any reason to sing? Why do people sing?
STUDENT 3: To lift their spirits…
STUDENT 4: …it makes you feel better…
STUDENT 5: … it makes others feel better…
STUDENT 6: …some songs teach lessons…
STUDENT 7: …some songs are just plain fun…
STUDENT 8: …some songs tell how we feel about…
STUDENT 9: …someone or…
STUDENT 10: …something or…
STUDENT 11: … their country…
STUDENT 1: Ok, ok, I get it already…but why do we have to sing in class? Can’t we ever find a more exciting place to sing?
STUDENT 2: Sure, the bathtub… (rubs under arms)
STUDENT 3:(put on cowboy hat) … on a tractor…
