LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!
By Caroline S. Mackay
VITAL STATISTICS
Age level--------------------------------K-3rd (but could be adapted)
Speakers---------------------------------20
Performance time----------------------45-60 minutes
MUSIC
I suggest that while the students are performing their skills that you add music. It will keep the noise down and give them a rhythm to perform to.
ACTIVITIES INCLUDED & Possible music to go with each
Marching-----------------------------a march
Balance beam------------------------Surfing USA
Jump rope------ (this should not be a real long activity)
Throwing and catching-------------Fun, Fun, Fun
Ladders-------------------------------Step in Time
Relay with umbrellas---------------Singing in the Rain
Parachute-----------------------------Let’s go Fly a Kite
Scooter boards-----------------------Let the Good Times Roll
Hula Hoops--------------------------Hawaiian music
Dance
(Be sure to time the activities so that the students do not get exhausted. I would not make them do the activity for the full length of the song unless it is an easy activity such as the parachute or balance beam.)
SAMPLE SCRIPT
SPEAKER 1: Mom and Dad we’re glad you’re here
We have fun things to show and share
We get stronger each and every day
As we exercise from September to May
SPEAKER 2: We can balance on a beam
This is not as easy as it seems.
(Speakers go back and join their line.)
BALANCE BEAM ACTIVITY
(When the music stops and the activity is over have the students go get their jump ropes and spread out on the floor so they have room to jump rope. Then have them sit cross legged while the speakers speak.)
(Speaker 3 & 4 comes to the mike)
SPEAKER 3: We can jump a rope just right
Doing it with all our might
SPEAKER 4: We may make a mistake or two
But that’s okay because we all do.
